Setting Up a Home Computer Workspace

If you are a home-based graphic designer or website designer, you would realise that a simple computer table is insufficient. You would probably need more space for your CPU, monitor, and other computer peripherals. In addition, you may need to arrange the elements in your desk to help you work more efficiently. Following are some advice that you might like to consider.

First, find a quiet, well-lit area in your home where you can set up your workspace. A corner with a window is good but a spare room or an attic that underwent loft conversion is the best. Make sure that the place has an adequate number of electrical outlets and an Internet port. Also, make sure the space you choose is air-conditioned and well ventilated because computer hardware can overheat, which might damage sensitive electronics.

Second, choose a desk or table where you can place your equipment. Better yet, acquire and L- or U-shaped table. Place your main monitor on the centre and your secondary monitors and peripherals on the side tables. In addition, purchase an office chair that swivels 360 degrees. It allows you to easily reach your equipment without standing up. It is also a good idea to place a small bookcase nearby. This is where you can put your reference materials, instruction manuals, guides, blank CDs, and other necessary items. In addition, get a small cabinet where you can keep hardcopy files and office supplies.

Once you get the necessary elements in place, it is time to add decorative items to encourage you or to keep your creative juices flowing. Plants, figurines, and posters add life to your home office. Just make sure not to add too much or they will distract you from your work.
